MCP server directory
An MCP server gives an assistant tools: files, repositories, a browser, payments. Each listing says who maintains it, how to install it, and what it can read, write or spend.

MCP steering group · FilesReads, writes, edits, moves and searches files, and refuses any path outside the directories you allow. A reference implementation, not a production product.

Git
MCP steering group · Dev toolsStatus, diffs, log and show on a local repository, plus add, commit, reset, branch and checkout. Its tool list has no push, pull or fetch.

Memory
MCP steering group · DataA knowledge graph of entities, relations and observations kept in a local JSONL file that the assistant can add to, search and delete from.

Sequential Thinking
MCP steering group · ReasoningOne tool, sequential_thinking, that records numbered, revisable reasoning steps. It reads and writes nothing outside itself.

GitHub
GitHub · Dev toolsRepositories, issues, pull requests, Actions and security alerts on anything your token or OAuth grant can reach. Offers a read-only mode.

Upstash · DocsTwo tools that find a library and pull version-specific docs and examples into the prompt. Your query goes to the Context7 service.

Sentry
Sentry · Dev toolsSearch errors, analyse performance, triage issues and manage projects. Scope the URL to one organisation or project.

Before you install one
A server runs with whatever access you give it, and anything it reads can carry instructions to your assistant. Four checks, drawn from the MCP specification and the servers' own READMEs.
- 1 Read the access line Writes data and Moves money mean a wrong tool call changes something real. Use a read-only mode where one exists: GitHub, Linear and Supabase each document one.
- 2 Scope the token Give each server its own token with the fewest permissions it needs. The MCP security guidance calls this scope minimization, and the GitHub server README asks for separate tokens per project.
- 3 Pin the version A local server runs with the same privileges as your client. Replace @latest with an exact version, such as @playwright/mcp@0.0.83 (latest on npm on 2026-10-15), so the code you reviewed is the code that runs.
- 4 Treat fetched text as untrusted The MCP tools specification says a human should be able to deny any tool call. Keep confirmations on: a web page, issue or support ticket can contain instructions aimed at your assistant.
Adding a server to your client
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems. Most clients keep a JSON list of servers: a local server is the command that starts it, a remote server is a URL. VS Code names the top-level key servers; many other clients use mcpServers.
