  • Code MIT Use, change and sell it. Keep the copyright and permission notice with the code.
  • Prompts and text CC-BY-4.0 Share and adapt, even commercially, with credit, a link to the licence and a note of changes.
  • Tracker and glossary CC-BY-4.0 The same terms. Quote the verified date with any tracker row, because policies change.

Code

Every script and prompt output on CodeLifter is released under the MIT licence unless its provenance record names another. The MIT License text grants permission, free of charge, to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense and sell copies of the software. Its one condition is that the copyright notice and the permission notice are included in all copies or substantial portions of the software. The software is provided as is, without warranty of any kind.

The simplest way to meet the condition is a short credit comment at the top of the file plus the full MIT text in a LICENSE file shipped alongside, or the full text pasted into the comment itself.

Prompts, articles and data

Prompts, articles, the policy tracker and the glossary are released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International. The deed says you may share the material in any medium or format and adapt it for any purpose, even commercially.

In return, give appropriate credit, link to the licence, and indicate if you made changes, without suggesting that the editors endorse you or your use. You may not add terms or technical measures that stop others doing what the licence permits. Credit the CodeLifter editors and link the page you used.

Exceptions

Third-party material keeps its own terms: quotations from project policies and papers, linked documents, and the sample quotations in the random quote script belong to their authors and publishers. Follow the link to the original and check its terms before you reuse it.

The scripts CodeBrain.com published on the original site, from about 1999 to 2016, are not reproduced here and are not covered by these licences. Restored pages contain new code, and their records say so.

Does the licence still apply when AI helped write the code?

Every CodeLifter page is drafted with AI assistance and then tested, edited and sourced by the editors, and each record says so. How much copyright protection a given passage carries depends on how much human authorship it contains. The licence is the editors’ grant of whatever rights they hold, and the warranty disclaimer applies either way.

The licences do not exclude machine use. If an assistant quotes a page in an answer, the same credit and link apply as for any other reuse.
