Free code from about 1999. Now with receipts.
CodeLifter.com was a free cut and paste JavaScript library, published by CodeBrain.com from about 1999 to 2016. Restored in 2026, it covers code you did not write yourself: prompts reviewed by the editors, the code they should produce, and a record of where every page came from.
History, 1999 to 2026
Dates before 2026 come from link records and copies of the old pages quoted elsewhere, so they are marked “about”.
- About 1999 CodeLifter.com starts publishing free cut and paste JavaScript, one script per page, published by CodeBrain.com. Old links to it carry the title Software and Scripts by CodeBrain.com.
- 2000s The library grows to scripts such as no right-click, capture mouse position, an auto-size image popup, a draggable layer, slideshows and a random quote, plus short tips and small Windows tools like PopUp Maker.
- 2003 to 2004 The no right-click script carries a 2003 CodeLifter.com copyright line. A 2004 web design mailing list post links to it, and forum posts copy it with the header intact.
- About 2016 The library stops being updated, and search traffic to it fades over the next two years. The domain later lapses and is used for unrelated sites, a phone blog among them.
- 2026 Independent editors restore CodeLifter: six classic scripts rebuilt as reviewed prompts, an article on the no right-click script, and the Provenance Desk on copied and generated code.
How pages are written and checked
We hold our own pages to the standard we recommend for code: say who made it, from what, and when it was last checked.
- 1 Research An editor collects primary sources: papers, official policies, documentation. Secondary write-ups are used only to find primaries.
- 2 Drafting Every draft is written with AI assistance from the editor’s notes and sources. The page is then marked AI-assisted.
- 3 Editorial review An editor checks every factual sentence against its source, rewrites anything unsupported and removes claims that cannot be sourced.
- 4 Testing Script code is run by an editor in a current browser. Prompts have not yet been run against a named assistant, and each page says what was tested and what was not.
- 5 Re-verification The last verified date on a page changes only when an editor has rechecked it against its sources.
The three author types
- Human-written
- Written by an editor with no generated text. Every page published so far is AI-assisted, so this mark is not in use yet.
- AI-assistededitor-reviewed
- Drafted with AI assistance, then checked and rewritten by an editor against every source. Every page on this site carries this mark.
- AI-generatedunreviewed
- Marks sample code that shows a typical unreviewed generated answer, written by the editors for comparison and not captured from a named tool. Never used for advice.
Licences
Code on CodeLifter is under the MIT licence: use it anywhere, keep the copyright line. Prompts and articles are under CC-BY-4.0: quote or adapt them with credit and a link back.
Scripts from the original site of about 1999 to 2016 are not republished. Where we restored one, the code is new, and its record says so. Full terms are on the licence page.
Corrections and independence
If a page is wrong, tell us through the contact page or on the forum. We check the claim against its source, correct the page and update its last verified date.
The CodeLifter editors have no connection with CodeBrain.com, the original publisher, or with later owners of the domain. Pages carry no paid placements. Our privacy and terms pages are written in the same plain style as this one.
