The CodeLifter software archive
What PopUp Maker, SlideShow Builder and the other CodeLifter tools were, and why the old downloads are retired rather than re-hosted.
Product names from old links to codelifter.com. Checked 2026-10-15.- PopUp Maker Retired A Windows tool for building popup windows. Its old page was /pop5index.html.
- SlideShow Builder Retired A Windows tool for image slideshows. Its old page was /sbs55index.html.
- Downloads Not re-hosted Licence terms unconfirmed, files unverifiable, old download counter abused.
What were the CodeLifter tools?
Besides its free scripts, CodeLifter carried a small software section. CodeBrain.com, the company that published the site, offered a handful of Windows programs for people building web pages by hand in the early 2000s.
Two names survive clearly in old links to the site: PopUp Maker and SlideShow Builder. The names describe the jobs, popup windows and image slideshows, and that is as far as the records we hold go. The old site had product pages for at least three more programs, at /fm5index.html, /cl5index.html and /sc3index.html, whose names the editors cannot confirm, so this page does not guess at them.
We have no reliable record of prices, version histories or release dates, and we publish none. If you used one of these programs and kept its documentation, the editors would like to see it at editor@codelifter.com.
Why are the old downloads not available?
The installers are retired for four reasons, and any one of them would be enough.
Licence: the terms CodeBrain.com attached to these programs cannot be confirmed, and re-hosting someone else’s software without permission is not ours to do. Security: the files are old Windows executables with no signature a current system can verify, so there is no way to show that a copy is the original and has not been altered. Compatibility: they were built for the Windows versions of their day, and the popup and slideshow code they produced predates current browser behaviour and accessibility practice. Abuse: the old download counter was later misused as an open redirect by unrelated sites, so those download addresses are closed for good.
Copies of old installers may still turn up on download mirrors. CodeLifter cannot vouch for any of them, and we suggest you do not run them. The rule is the one we apply to generated code: do not run what you cannot trace.
What replaced PopUp Maker and SlideShow Builder?
Browsers now do most of what these tools existed for. A popup that once needed a separate window and generated script can use the dialog element. MDN’s reference describes the dialog element as representing a modal or non-modal dialog box, and its modal example, opened with showModal(), can be closed with the Esc key. The image popup prompt on the shelf uses that pattern, with no new window and no popup blocker to fight.
For slideshows, the slideshow prompt covers the common case of stepping through a set of images with previous and next buttons, alt text and respect for the reduced-motion setting. Both are MIT licensed and both state their origin.

Where should I go now?
The Script Shelf lists every old CodeLifter script we can name, with what became of it. The most copied script on the old site stopped visitors right-clicking on a page; it never protected anything, and the article on disabling right-click explains why and what shows authorship instead.
